VCDS, formerly known as VAG-COM, is Ross-Tech's Windows diagnostic software for Volkswagen Audi Group cars, used with a Ross-Tech interface. It is a respected specialist tool. Automotics does not sell VCDS. This guide explains what it does and which multi-brand workshop tools you can use alongside it or instead.
VCDS is diagnostic software from Ross-Tech for Volkswagen Audi Group vehicles. It runs on a Windows PC and connects to the car through a Ross-Tech interface such as the HEX-V2 or HEX-NET. It reads fault codes, shows live data from the control units and supports coding and adaptations.
Specialists value it for depth on one group of makes. Ross-Tech publishes the current feature list, supported models and licensing details on its own website, so check there before you decide. The same habit applies to any workshop tool you compare it with.
VCDS is strongest for a workshop or enthusiast that works almost only on VAG cars. A tool built around one group of makes keeps the workflow focused, and the Windows laptop you already own does the rest. Ross-Tech supports it directly as the manufacturer.
A garage that serves many makes needs one tool for all of them. Our multi-brand diagnostic tablets from Autel, Thinkcar, Launch and Topdon cover many manufacturers in a single device, so the same tablet works on a Golf in the morning and on another make in the afternoon.
The same range adds functions such as ADAS calibration and key programming, and update licences keep the tools current. Coverage differs by tool and vehicle, so compare the function list for the cars you service most.
If you want factory-level software for the VAG group, our OEM dealer diagnostic kits include ODIS for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, Skoda and Cupra.
Newer VAG cars protect some control units with SFD, a security layer that restricts coding and adaptations. Any diagnostic tool needs authorised access for those functions. Check the current Ross-Tech guidance for the car in front of you, and plan the access before the job starts.
On the multi-brand side, Autel, Thinkcar and EAATA sell yearly VAG Security Gateway licences, and the Autel and Thinkcar product pages state that they cover SFD on compatible devices. Read our SFD guide for the full picture, or browse our Security Gateway licences.
Start with the cars you service, not with the tool. The right choice follows from your customer mix, the functions you need and the laptop or tablet you already use. A short checklist keeps the decision practical and avoids buying twice.
Choose VCDS if you mainly work on VAG cars and want a dedicated tool. Choose a multi-brand tool if your customers drive many makes. Some workshops keep both, using VCDS for VAG depth and a tablet for everything else on the ramp.
If you are also comparing phone-based options, see our OBDeleven guide.
No. We do not sell VCDS or other Ross-Tech products. We supply professional multi-brand diagnostic tools, OEM software and licences.
VAG-COM is the earlier name of the Ross-Tech software. Today it is sold as VCDS.
For many common tasks, yes. Coverage differs by tool and vehicle, so check the function list for the exact make, model and year.
Some functions on newer VAG models need SFD access. A VAG Security Gateway licence for your tool brand covers that on the devices it supports.
Not sure which tool fits your workshop? Ask the Automotics technicians. Tell us the makes you service and the jobs you do most often, and we will advise on tools, interfaces and licences.
