Anyone looking for an affordable, reliable car diagnostic tool will inevitably come across the ThinkCar brand. From the compact ThinkDiag to the professional ThinkTool Euro 391: the range is wide, and that's precisely what sometimes makes the choice difficult. In this article, we list what a ThinkCar scanner precisely does, which models are available, and what you should pay attention to before purchasing one.
A ThinkCar scanner is an OBD2 diagnostic tool that allows you to read fault codes, view live sensor data, and on some models, even perform service functions (such as resetting an oil service or registering a battery). ThinkCar targets both professional garages and advanced DIYers, with devices ranging from simple Bluetooth dongles to full-fledged tablets with brand-specific software.
The major advantage of ThinkCar compared to more expensive brands like Autel or Launch is its price-quality ratio: you often get a large part of the functionality of a professional diagnostic device, at a fraction of the cost.
Garages and independent mechanics who need a second or third scanner in addition to their main device, for example, for quick diagnostics on the lift.
DIYers and car enthusiasts who want to go beyond reading basic fault codes and also want to use live data or service functions.
Fleet managers who work with multiple brands and don't want to purchase a separate tool for each brand.
Those who only occasionally want to read a check engine light will find a simple OBD2 dongle sufficient. Those who regularly want to delve deeper (resets, coding, bi-directional tests) should look at the more extensive ThinkTool or ThinkScan series.
ThinkDiag / ThinkDiag 2: Compact Bluetooth dongle + app. Suitable for entry-level and occasional use.
ThinkScan series (e.g., 689 BT): Handheld with its own screen. Suitable for quick diagnostics without needing a smartphone.
ThinkTool Euro 391: Full-fledged tablet focused on European brands. Suitable for garages that want to delve deeper into European cars.
ThinkTool Pro / Pros Elite: Extensive tablet with broad brand coverage. Suitable for professional use with multiple brands.
Note: For entry-level models (such as ThinkDiag), you often pay a small amount for the device itself, but you need a subscription or activation to unlock all brand-specific functions. Factor that into your total cost.
Brand coverage. Do you mainly work on European cars? Then a tool like the ThinkTool Euro 391 is more interesting than a general entry-level model.
Bluetooth versus wired. Bluetooth dongles are more compact and work via an app, but they are slightly more prone to connection problems than a tool with its own screen.
Software updates. Check whether updates are included or need to be paid for annually. This partly determines the long-term price.
Service functions versus read-only. If you also want to perform resets and codings, opt for a model from the ThinkTool series instead of an entry-level dongle.
Warranty and Dutch-language support. Buy from a distributor who offers Dutch-language support and warranty. This saves you time with firmware or activation problems.
ThinkCar is often compared to brands like Autel, Launch, and Mucar. The short answer: Autel and Launch generally offer a broader professional range with higher prices, while ThinkCar (and comparable brands like Mucar) focus on a strong price-quality ratio for semi-professional and private use. For a garage that works daily with complex European brands, a tool like the PIWIS or Xentry solution is often still needed as a supplement. ThinkCar is then more of a handy, affordable second tool.
Does a ThinkCar scanner work on all car brands? Most models support a wide range of brands, but the depth of functions (e.g., codings) varies per brand and model. Always check the brand list for the specific device.
Do I need internet to use a ThinkCar tool? For initial activation and updates, yes. For daily code reading, an internet connection is usually not required.
Is a ThinkCar scanner suitable for professional use? The entry-level models are mainly suitable as supplementary tools. The ThinkTool Pro series is indeed used by garages as a full-fledged diagnostic tool.
A ThinkCar scanner is an excellent choice if you're looking for an affordable, versatile diagnostic tool, as long as you choose the model that fits your use. For simple code reading, a ThinkDiag suffices; if you also want to perform resets and deeper diagnostic work on European cars, then the ThinkTool Euro 391 is the logical next step.
